This week I want to start off with some verses, When he had entered Capernaum, a centurion came forward to him, appealing to him, “Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, suffering terribly.” And he said to him, “I will come and heal him.” But the centurion replied, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof, but only say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I too am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” When Jesus heard this, he marveled and said to those who followed him, “Truly, I tell you, with no one in Israel have I found such faith. I tell you, many will come from east and west and recline at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, while the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” And to the centurion Jesus said, “Go; let it be done for you as you have believed.” And the servant was healed at that very moment. Matthew 8:5-13 This is an account that lots of you probably know, if you have been in church for sometime you probably know this story of the centurion. In this account, Jesus is in Capernaum and a centurion (this is a Roman commander in charge of hundreds of soldiers) came to Jesus because his servant was paralyzed and severing terribly. Which probably means he was unable to be moved from where he was lying because of the pain. But this centurion who had the power to tell other people to go and ask Jesus to heal his servant instead chose to go boldly to Jesus with a crowd of people watching him and asked Jesus to heal his servant. Even though this was early in Jesus’s ministry, He was probably not very popular among the Romans and the religious leaders. So to come with such confidence and ask Jesus to heal someone, who was one of the lowest members of the society showed that the centurion had a relationship with his servant. It also showed he knew that the Jewish God was not like the Roman’s gods. Jesus saw the faith of the centurion and He healed the servant right then and there. In today’s world we all probably know someone who doesn’t know Jesus as their Lord and Savior and who is completely paralyzed without faith. This person you may have tried to share the gospel with, but they don’t have the faith to believe, and or they don’t want to have faith in Him. Maybe this person just doesn’t want to listen to anyone about the gospel any more. You may have already brought this person to the Lord in prayer, but we don’t have to push by the crowds to get to Jesus, we can just pray anywhere for anyone or anything. If during this time you have more or less time, it doesn’t really matter whether you have a little bit more or if this is one of the busiest times in your life, you can take time to pray. We can pray while we are commuting back and forth to work or before we go to sleep at night. We should pray for all of our friends and families, as well as those that are on the front lines of this pandemic and for the ones who are trying to find a cure for this. So this week let’s pray for those who don’t know Him and for those who are on the front lines and remember that we don’t have to make our way through the crowds of people to come and ask God for something that we need or want, we just have to take time out of our day and talk to Him. Let’s also remember that it wasn’t about the centurion pushing his way through the crowds, it was about his faith of asking Jesus to Heal his servant from a distance. Let’s have faith from a distance that He will draw our unsaved friends and families to Him by His power.
