Seeking Jesus for the right reason

This week I want to start off with some verses,  Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a desolate place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick. Now when it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” But Jesus said, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.”  They said to him, “We have only five loaves here and two fish.” And he said, “Bring them here to me.”  Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children. Matthew 14:13‭-‬21 This is a story that you have probably heard, if you have been in church for very long. I want you to think about the crowd who followed Jesus across the sea. There were probably one of four different reasons that these people were following Jesus.  Reason number one, they wanted Jesus to heal them, someone in their family or their friends. Reason number two, they thought He was the Messiah or a rabbi. Reason number three, they were interested in what Jesus had to say. Reason number four, they were doing it because they went with someone they knew or because they wanted to feel good about themselves. The ones who chased Jesus’s boat around the sea to  where He stopped and more that gathered with the crowd, were about 20,000. It is quite impressive that they followed Him that long and far. We don’t know how far it was but Jesus said “they had been with Him 3 days”. I want you to think about the 4 reasons that the people in the crowd followed Jesus. These are very similar reasons that we follow Jesus today or seek Him. We know He is the Savior, we may want something from Him and that is the only time we seek Him, we see the crowd and follow them or you are following because you are going through the motions. So this week I want you to think about which of these four reasons and ask yourself why are you  seeking Jesus? Do you seek Jesus only when you want something from Him.  Are you one in the crowd who doesn’t know Him but saw the crowd and gathered with them. Now you have a choice to make.  You have heard who Jesus is, your choices are in the words of C. S. LEWIS, He either was and is the Son of God, a liar or a lunatic. If  you want to  know Him today you can! If you want to know Him better you can read the Bible and pray to Him so you can know Him better. This week let’s seek Jesus not for what he can do for us but for what we can do for Him and His kingdom. Because the ultimate reason we were created was to draw others to Him and have communion with Him.
